UL 2272 and scooter battery safety: read the exact words

UL 2272 is the safety standard for the electrical system of personal e-mobility devices, including e-scooters. UL Solutions says it covers the drive train, battery and charger working together. It does not judge how well you can control the scooter. What matters is exactly what the listing says: "certified" is not the same as "passed testing," and neither is a certificate you can see.
What the standards are
- UL 2272: electrical systems for personal e-mobility devices such as e-scooters and hoverboards.
- UL 2271: batteries for light electric vehicles.

UL Solutions notes that New York City requires e-scooters sold, leased or rented there to be certified to UL 2272 by UL or another recognized testing lab. Other cities and some landlords have their own rules.

Charging, the CPSC way
- Follow the maker's charging instructions and unplug when done.
- Be there while it charges. CPSC says never to charge while you sleep or are away, and that many lithium-ion battery fires and deaths happened at night while families slept.
- Use only the charger that came with the scooter or one the maker recommends. CPSC warns against "universal" chargers, which can fit and still be incompatible.
- Only use a replacement battery that the maker confirms is right for your scooter. Never use a pack that was modified or rebuilt by someone unqualified.
Charge times on our picks run from 4 hours (Gotrax) to 8 hours (Hiboy S2 Pro and MAX Pro), so start in the morning or evening, not at bedtime.
Storage and disposal
- Store and charge the scooter away from the door you would use to get out, on a hard floor.
- Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun. The MAX G2 listing gives a recommended storage range of 50 to 86 degrees F.
- Stop using a battery that is swollen, leaking, very hot or smells odd, and call the maker.
- Never put a lithium battery in the trash or regular recycling. CPSC says to take it to a battery recycler or hazardous waste site.
Fire is a real risk with these products. CPSC reported 19 deaths linked to micromobility device fires from January 2021 through November 2022.
Battery safety: use only the charger that came with the scooter, stay home and awake while it charges, unplug it when full, and stop using a battery that is swollen, hot, leaking or smells odd. Follow your scooter's manual first. This is general information, not electrical advice.
