Electric scooter brakes: what each type does and what our picks use

Updated

Look for two brakes you can use with your hands, not just one. Most commuter scooters pair one mechanical brake (drum or disc) with an electronic brake that uses the motor to slow the wheel. The mechanical brake does the hard stopping. The electronic one helps and adds a little charge back in some designs.

TypeWhat it doesTrade-off
DrumSealed inside the hubLittle upkeep and handles wet weather well. Less bite than a good disc
DiscCaliper squeezes a metal rotorStrong when adjusted. Needs pad and cable care. The rotor is exposed to grit
Electronic, EABS or regenerativeThe motor resists the wheelSmooth, no wear. Weak at low speed and on its own not enough for a hard stop
Foot fender brakeYou press the rear fender onto the tireA backup. Not a main brake at speed

What each listing states

ScooterBrakes per the listingListed top speed
Gotrax GXL V2Rear disc plus electronic (EABS)15.5 MPH
Segway Ninebot E2 ProFront drum plus rear electric18.6 MPH
Hiboy S2 ProDisc plus electronic (EABS)19 MPH
Segway Ninebot MAX G2Front drum plus rear electronic22 MPH
Hiboy S2 MAXFront drum plus rear regenerative19 MPH
Hiboy MAX ProFront and rear drum plus electronic22 MPH

The Hiboy MAX Pro is the only pick here with a drum brake on both wheels, which I like on a 51.6 lb scooter that reaches 22 MPH. The Gotrax GXL V2 listing is not fully consistent: its graphic shows a rear disc plus EABS, and its spec table only says rear braking. Look at the scooter when it arrives. Some S2 MAX owners mention weak brakes, so test and adjust it early.

Stopping safely on a scooter

Heavier riders and faster scooters need more room to stop. NHTSA notes that when a motor vehicle is involved in an e-scooter crash, the rider's injuries are likely to be worse. Ride at a speed where you can stop before the car that did not see you.

Scooter rules differ by state, city and campus. This page is general information, not legal advice. Check your own local rules before you ride.
