Electric scooter weight limits: your weight, and the scooter's
Updated
Every scooter has two weights that matter. The max load is how much it is built to carry: you, your bag and anything else. The carry weight is what you lift on stairs, into a car or onto a train. On our list, three scooters stop at 220 lb and three go to 265 lb. CPSC tells riders to check the maker's weight and age limits before riding.
Max load, as each listing shows it
| Scooter | Max load | Carry weight | Battery | Our estimate at 250 lb, mixed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Segway Ninebot E2 Pro | 265 lb | 41.4 lb | 275Wh | 12 mi |
| Segway Ninebot MAX G2 | 265 lb | 53.5 lb | 551Wh | 24 mi |
| Hiboy MAX Pro | 265 lb | 51.6 lb | 720Wh | 32 mi |
| Gotrax GXL V2 | 220 lb | 27 lb | 187.2Wh | Over its limit |
| Hiboy S2 Pro | 220 lb | 35.9 lb | 417.6Wh | Over its limit |
| Hiboy S2 MAX | 220 lb | 41.4 lb | 556.8Wh | Over its limit |
What the number includes
Max load means everything on the deck. A 205 lb rider with a 15 lb backpack is 220 lb, right at the limit of the Gotrax and both Hiboy S2 models. Leave some room. A scooter run at its limit every day wears its tires, brakes and folding joint faster, and climbs hills more slowly.
Heavier riders use more battery
In our range model, a 250 lb rider uses about 20.5 Wh per mile on mixed riding, against 17.0 for a 165 lb rider. For the three scooters rated to 265 lb that works out to:
- Hiboy MAX Pro, 720Wh: about 32 miles mixed, 22 fast.
- Segway MAX G2, 551Wh: about 24 miles mixed, 17 fast.
- Segway E2 Pro, 275Wh: about 12 miles mixed, 9 fast.
For most heavier riders I'd pick the Hiboy MAX Pro for its battery, or the Segway MAX G2 if you also want a stated water rating. Caveat for both: they weigh more than 50 lb.
Carry weight
- Gotrax GXL V227 lb
- Hiboy S2 Pro35.9 lb
- Segway Ninebot E2 Pro41.4 lb
- Hiboy S2 MAX41.4 lb
- Hiboy MAX Pro51.6 lb
- Segway Ninebot MAX G253.5 lb
27 lb is a bag of dog food. 50 lb and up is hard to carry up more than one flight, and awkward on a crowded train. If you will carry it every day, weight matters more than range. The Gotrax GXL V2 is the easy lift here, and the Hiboy S2 MAX is the lightest of the big-battery scooters. Fold it and try the lift in the first week, while you can still return it.
