How far will an electric scooter really go with you on it?

Ignore the claimed miles and find the battery size in watt-hours (Wh). If the listing only gives volts and amp-hours, multiply them: 36V x 15.3Ah is about 551Wh. Then add your weight and riding style below.

How the estimate works
A scooter uses a certain number of watt-hours for each mile. I start from a base for a 165 lb rider: 12 Wh per mile for gentle eco riding, 17 for mixed riding, and 24 for fast riding with hills and stops. Then I adjust for weight. About 40 percent of the energy goes to rolling and climbing, which grows with weight, so the base is multiplied by 0.6 + 0.4 x (your weight / 165). Only 90 percent of the battery counts as usable, because scooters cut power before the cells are fully empty.
These base numbers are my planning figures, not lab results. They sit close to what one maker publishes: Segway lists the E2 Pro's 275Wh battery at 24.9 miles in Eco mode and 16.8 miles in Sport mode. That drop, about a third, is the speed effect in the maker's own numbers.
Rider weight changes the answer
Here is the 551Wh Segway MAX G2 on mixed riding at three rider weights:

Segway claims up to 43 miles for the same battery. None of the three riders above gets close in mixed riding, and that is normal.

Plan with the low number
Plan your round trip around the low end of the estimate, or charge at work. Range drops in the cold, as the battery ages, when tires are soft, and into a headwind. Running flat also means pushing a heavy scooter home. CPSC notes that e-scooters have small tires, so objects and uneven surfaces can throw you off, and NHTSA notes that many e-scooter crashes happen where pavement is poor. A shorter, slower ride on good pavement is kinder to the battery and to you.
